We cover everything from EV Charging Points to Domestic/Commercial/Industrial Electrical Work. Keep reading to learn more.
With many years experience in the trade, we have built a large base of happy clients. Our many years experience means we can offer a wide range of services throughout East Grinstead, and West Sussex. These include but are not limited to the following;
David Edwards Electrical Contractors - March 1990 is where it all started, i got made redundant from a great job, which was horrible news for a young chap, who'd just bought his 1st House 6 months or so previous.
I didn't know what to do, so decided to go self employed again, [I’d had a go previously, but was probably far too young]. 35 years on i'm still going. It's been challenging at times i admit, but on the whole very rewarding.
I was lucky in some ways that the Domestic recession in the early 1990's was coming to an end, the industrial side of the down time [hence why I was made redundant] just starting to affect the building work I was involved in]. So when I went back self employed many of the customers I'd had before hadn’t replaced me permanently as such, so came back. There we also customers who hadn’t asked other Electricians to carry out their jobs that maybe would have asked me in the 1st place had I not been on my self employed sabbatical they were also happy to see me again.
So thankfully I had a great start to my 2nd spell of Self Employment.
Going even further back, to my training, it was from a 1 man band like me, of which I still hold many of his values now, although at the time I probably thought he was a moaning old 'Minnie', it wasn’t until my next job I appreciated what I had been taught by him, as they were in my opinion quite rough with his standards being very high, so was now being taught how not to do things, which I hope that makes sense.
I still got something from them mind you, the knowledge of wiring Domestic Heating controls, as it was for a firm who worked for local heating companies including the local division of the Gas Board right up and in to South London, this my 1st spell as a self employed Electrician, as a Sub Contractor to them, along with getting a few jobs of my own, but as I've said previously I didn’t have the dedication needed for being Self Employed being in my very early 20’s.
I packed it in my 1st spell in self employment to go and work for a small Industrial Heating and Ventilation firm, this job took me all over the UK, as they had several national contracts, Courts Furnishings, the Territorial Army, London Schools and many shop chains to name a few. This is where i was able to put some of the stuff I'd been taught by my Electrician Trainer, and what i had been taught in College into practice, and at a slightly less frantic pace. This job stood me in good stead for the future and being Self Employed. The bosses taught me how to run a firm, I in my early 20’s running some quite large jobs for them, as well as undertaking quite a few of them myself, with learning much about 3 Phase and much more of the Industrial side of Electrical work. This is the job I was made redundant from, and as it says at the start of my waffle above ⬆️ this was the start of David Edwards Electrical Contractors in 1990.
I have been an NICEIC Approved Contractor for 31 years along with being the Qualified Supervisor at the Heating and Ventilation firm I had worked for the previous 4 years, so any work that needs notifying to building control is not a problem [you may know as Part P].
We also follow the #E5 Groups work Ethos to the best of our knowledge.
All Electrical Installation and testing works are carried to to the latest edition of B.S. 7671 [IET Wiring Regulations] and where relevant either of the individual Electrical Safety Council Best Practice Guides, of which there are 10 Publications, eg where carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report [EICR] the latest edition of Best Practice Guide no.4 to the latest edition is relevant at the time, would be referred to. These are publications that are written to assist with carrying out our work. all Materials used are to their latest and any relevant British Standards.
I have worked, and still do for the following clients in my 35 years of being self employed, a few examples are shown below⬇️:-
* Rentokil and their many local offices, before they were all shut down, with them going in a different direction.
* Lloyds Bank
* Southern Housing, a housing provider, both for the young and elderly, I looked after 68 of their Schemes, until they sold up.
* Anchor Housing, a much bigger organisation, bought the part of Southern Housing, which suited me the best, the larger side, so to speak, although I did lose many of the longer distance Schemes. Southern Housing bought their own Building Company to do all of their works, so I didn’t get anything else from them.
* McCarthy and Stone and 1st Port both smaller similar companies to Anchor.
* Rydon Homes offices in the South East, and snagging work from their sites, from their sites when they just built houses.
* Hartwell Homes, a local developer of quality houses, they also had 2 x blocks of retirement homes, that we maintained for them as well.
* Realistic Properties and their sub division Realistic Building Company.
* My local [East Grinstead] Council, their Offices Function and Hire rooms.
* 3 local Parish Village Councils.
* Friends Removals and Self Storage in Forest Row.
* International College of Oriental Medicine (ICOM)
* Bultitude Properties
* And many Private customers both Domestic and Industrial/Commercial. These both one off and clients who continue to use me, some for many years.
* Amongst many others, but the list could go on and on.
* Brambletye and Stoke Brunswick Schools.
Onto Alan my right hand man. I’ve known him all my life, right from infant school, he’s 6 days younger than me.
He started his training as an Electrician with a local firm [getting the job over me lol], but didn’t complete his College Training, leaving to go and work for his Father a reputable local builder who carried out many types of work, so a useful man of many talents/trades. I was using both Alan and dear Robert who unfortunately passed away from a BrainTumour at 38-not fair-, so Alan came on board more so with Robert’s passing, this giving me the opportunity to branch out carrying out many other trades please see list below ⬇️. He also able to finish his training with me.
Work we undertake:-
- Most Electrical Works [not appliance repairs, although a good contact can be supplied].
• Electric Vehicle [EV] Charge Points.
* Heating works, both Central Heating control wiring, and Electrical Heating, Off Peak Storage Heaters and alike, along with 24 hour systems. These systems designed, by the Heating Company [manufacturer] I use their information and then adapt to the clients needs where required.
* Testing [EICR’s] again both single and larger 3 Phase installations.
* Landlord Checks including 5 yearly checks as required by the Government and their Private Rented Sector Legislations [5 years does depend on the state of the installations might I add].
* Emergency Lighting, as with the Electrical Heating above can get designed, this so as to stay within Regulations, as they do change regularly.
* All Fire/Smoke/Heat Fire alarm systems, both Domestic Smoke Alarms and Industrial systems, designed to which ever Edition thats relevant to B.S. 5839-6 [for Domestic], although I would always suggest the industrial types being taken over by a BSI Accredited firm for their maintenance. Domestic Alarm systems would be monitored by yourselves, although if you’d prefer we could make a small visit to test. I am an Aico preferred installer.
* Electrical maintenance works.
* Fault Finding.
* At the bottom of the list Portable Appliance Testing.
&
- Building Maintenance works:-
* Small Brickworks, inclusive of repointing.
* Some Carpentry jobs, larger ones can be organised if required.
* Kitchen installs including Plumbing and obviously the Electrics.
* Bathroom installs including Wetroom conversions.
* Painting and Decorating, both internal and external.
* Gutters and some Drainage jobs.
* Fencing, both repairs as well as complete fences.
* Small Roof repairs, larger can be organised if required, but with sourcing external Contractors.
* Damp investigative job, although these can be lengthy, and then the repairs needed.
* Disabled conversions both small and large.
Recent years haven’t been so kind annoyingly, with me having cancer treatments, all clear now thankfully. Then getting diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, this leaving me in a Wheelchair the majority of the time, but I am still doing a little work. I can assure you that Alan has been and is more than a capable deputy, in doing all of the above work, and if it’s a job that I’ve specialised in the past, I just come along to annoy him.
